The Rebbe shined brilliantly as he prayed. It felt as though he was face-to-face with the Maker and anyone who participated with him felt that they could do the same. Praying together with the Rebbe meant we were being carried with him to the Creator.

The Rebbe had a very unique glow and when he looked at you it was as though his piercing blue eyes were looking straight at your soul. This was true each time I personally saw and met the Rebbe as he would bless me accordingly.

Based on a photo of the Rebbe taken on the 27th of Adar, it was the day he had a stroke at the ohel while visiting his father-in-law, who was the preceding Rebbe. The Rebbe is waving shalom, hello, to all who was present as he entered into his Cadillac, taking him to the tomb stone of his late father-in-law.

The most auspicious moments came when he taught us the secrets. The Rebbe would close his eyes, bow his head to his heart, and concentrate deeply. We stood while he was sitting during these moments, humbly receiving his teaching. These were one of the many sacred times with the Rebbe, like with the students of Moses, when we stood in the light of our teacher's face.

For me, drawing the Rebbe is like studying a deep teaching from a book. Each part of the Rebbe's face is memorable and intricately symbolic like the Torah. The eyes reveal the inner light and the hairs of his beard represent differing strands of the paths taken.

The Rebbe could melt an entire room with his smile. During his orations, he would suddenly stop speaking and begin to sing a melody. On joyous occasions, he would clap along, so fast that he would lead us into a joyful singing. He always looked everyone straight in their eyes during these gatherings; with a smile, he would say, “L’chaim” to life and "L’Brachah" blessings. In the book Hayom Yom, it explains the Hebrew word L’Brachah as stated in the drawing. The hebrew word L’Brachah means to have a smooth and empty heart, which are spiritual tools for living a blessed life.

The ancient sages from what can be remembered through the scriptures say that the eyes of a person are the windows to the soul. The Rebbe looked at you, it felt as though he could project ancient wisdom. Drawing the Rebbe is as though I must get clearance from above to draw what is holy. As an artist, if I succeed in drawing the Rebbe’s eyes then I have been blessed to share his soul, his depth and freedom of imagination.

I remember the Rebbe doing the Shema, a practice that allowed him to look inward, his mind translated into the words. The Rebbe taught us that the Shema is a prayer meditation that aims to visualize the eternal being of our power. The Shema is a deep connection of the body and soul to connect with all of the world through love and unity.
